The University of Wisconsin charged a mandatory student fee that it used to fund the activities of student organizations. It allowed these funds to be distributed in a way favoring some views over others and requiring students to fund views they oppose. A student filed suit with ADF’s assistance. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the University could charge the mandatory fee, but only if the funds were distributed in a viewpoint-neutral way. The Court of Appeals that the University’s student fee system was discriminatory, ordering it changed to protect students’ First Amendment rights.
