Kenneth J. Howell, Ph.D. was an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Program for the Study of Religion at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. When Dr. Howell taught an “Introduction to Roman Catholicism” class, he included the church’s view on homosexuality. Shortly thereafter, and without giving Dr. Howell an opportunity to explain his statements, the University fired him. ADF sent the University a letter, explaining that it had violated Dr. Howell’s First Amendment rights and asking that he be reinstated. The University offered Dr. Howell his job back and subsequently determined that he had been inappropriately denied academic freedom and due process when the University terminated his teaching contract.
