In 2009, when the student group Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) applied for office space in the student union at the University of Minnesota, it seemed like a forgone conclusion. In fact, their request was headed for approval, until an administrator intervened and denied it because of the group’s conservative positions. When CFACT attended a Board of Governors meeting to appeal, the Board refused to hear their appeal and voted to deny CFACT office space. The Vice Provost denied a subsequent appeal, and group members were charged with various violations of University rules.; ;That’s when ADF got involved, writing demand letters to the University and defending members at their disciplinary hearings. The University backed down and withdrew all charges.
